There is a Swahili proverb (at least the internet tells me it's Swahili, cause we all know that only reliable sources make information available on the web, right?) that says, "When elephants fight, the grass suffers." Whether or not it's Swahili, Dutch or Hindi, it is an apt description of the political scene in the United States today.
I have come to believe that the Democratic and Republican parties are beholden to the extremes of their party, leaving the vast majority of Americans without adequate representation in all levels of our government. Let me be clear about one thing: I believe it is the Beltway that is divided, not America. So while the elephants fight their idealogical bottles in the District, Americans are left to deal with the consequences: rising budget deficits, rising national debt, a strained military unable to guard us as we enter an uncertain future, and the possibility that the next generation will not have a higher standard of living than the previous.
This is an entirely unacceptable condition. I cannot believe that the philosophy of one party over the other is the proper path - a one-party government is not a democracy. So while some give and take is necessary, so is compromise and working together. We're all in this together - the sooner that is realized the better of we'll all be.
